Hanami 2025: A Visit to Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park in Matsushima, Miyagi

Hanami 2025: A Visit to Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park in Matsushima, Miyagi Life

This spring in 2025, we went to Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park in Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, for our annual cherry blossom viewing (hanami).

Matsushima is one of the famed “Three Most Scenic Spots in Japan,” a title it proudly shares with Ama no Hashidate and Miyajima. After the Great East Japan Earthquake, we used to travel frequently—sometimes up to three times a week—from Sendai to the Matsushima and Ishinomaki area. Back then, the towns were in such a devastated state, and it was hard to even sense the presence of nature, let alone enjoy it. But now, those same streets are once again filled with people’s voices and smiles. Seeing so many tourists, including many from overseas, we felt a deep sense of gratitude that things are finally starting to settle down after the long recovery and the pandemic.

Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park

This park is named after a legend involving the Buddhist monk Saigyo. During his travels, he encountered a boy under a great pine tree here and lost a Zen dialogue with him, leading Saigyo to abandon his journey to Matsushima. Today, the park is a well-known cherry blossom spot. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a truly unique hanami experience, with cherry blossoms and the breathtaking view of Matsushima Bay blending seamlessly into one picture-perfect scene.

This park is famous not just for its pines (matsu), but also for its stunning cherry blossoms (sakura). The scenery here draws visitors from all over Japan—and even from abroad. The highlight is the panoramic view of a “sea of cherry blossoms” stretching out below, with the scenic Matsushima islands in the distance. If you take a photo from just the right angle, it looks like you’re standing on a carpet of cherry blossoms floating in the bay.

Cherry blossoms, pine trees, and Matsushima come together as one.

Café le Roman

During cherry blossom season, there’s a charming café called le Roman near the park, offering a panoramic view of Matsushima framed by blooming cherry trees. The location alone makes it worth a visit, but the food is also delicious. You’ll feel like you’re indulging in the ultimate luxury.

Because it’s such a popular spot this time of year, you’ll need to take a numbered ticket and wait your turn to be seated. It usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour. If you’re planning to dine, get your ticket first, then enjoy the surrounding cherry blossoms while you wait. There’s also a stylish little gift shop on the lower floor, making the wait pass quickly and pleasantly.

While the classic hanami experience is spreading a picnic mat under the cherry trees and enjoying a homemade bento, sometimes it’s nice to try something a little different.

I hope you’ll consider visiting during cherry blossom season—it’s truly worth the trip.
